Storm Leaves Several Public Schools Damaged In Nimba

Report from Nimba says a thunder storm has damaged several public schools in various education districts in Nimba County.
The Principal of the Sanniquellie first pre-primary school, Vivian Wonyen, explained that the incident occurred on April 28, 2025, during a heavy down pour of rains in the county.
According to Wonyen, the school was built in 1954 with dirt blocks and has a current enrollment of 270 students with nine assigned government teachers along with other support staff.
“The storm took away the entire roof from the building and the students are not coming to school now since the incident,” Principal Wonyen said.
“Beside Sanniquellie first pre-primary School, the storm also damaged the Martha Tubman Elementary School in Sanniquellie,” Wonyen further disclosed.
This is the third public school being damaged by storm in less than a month in the county.
During the middle of April 2025, the storm reportedly damaged the Loyee Public School in the Saclepeamah Education District.
When contacted , the Principal of the Martha Tubman Elementary in Sanniquellie, Alpha Karmon expressed dissatisfaction pointing out that, that situation is worrisome.
“The school has 488 students for 2024-2025 academic. Since the incidence , the students are not coming to school. The administration of the school is still in search of area to relocate the students,” Principal Karmon revealed.
When contacted , the County Education Officer(CEO) of Nimba, Francis Legay, confirmed the destruction of the public schools resulting from the storm.
“We are making SOS appeal for the students and to rebuild the structures for the school going kids,” CEO Legay added.
