The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has officially announced that this year’s World Press Freedom Day will be commemorated on Saturday, May 3, 2025, under the theme: “Sustaining Independent Journalism and Press Freedom in the Digital Age.”
In a statement issued by Chairman of the PUL Expert Working Committee on World Press Freedom Day Celebrations 2025 Festus Poquie, the Union revealed that a series of activities have been planned to mark the occasion, highlighting the critical role of journalism in the modern digital landscape.
To build momentum ahead of the event, commemorative T-shirts and caps are now available at the PUL Headquarters on Clay Street, Monrovia.
T-shirts are priced at US$5 or the equivalent in Liberian dollars, while caps are available for 500 Liberian dollars.
Journalists and PUL members are encouraged to visit the headquarters to make their purchases.
For members outside Montserrado County, items can be accessed through designated PUL County representatives.
The celebration will begin with a grand parade starting from the PUL Headquarters and ending at Monrovia City Hall.
This will be followed by an indoor program featuring a panel of experts discussing the challenges and opportunities of preserving press freedom and independence in the digital era.
The day will conclude with a series of sporting activities at the Saye Town sports pitch.
PUL president Julius Kanubah has approved the celebration plans and is calling on all journalists, media workers, and supporters of free press to actively participate in this important annual event.
World Press Freedom Day is observed globally to raise awareness of the importance of press freedom and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.
