Indian business tycoon Upjit Singh Sachdeva alias Jeety, known for his philanthropic efforts in Liberia, yesterday celebrated Easter Sunday by providing a festive meal for 1,534 inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison or South Beach.
The event, held on April 20, 2025, was not only a celebration of the Christian holiday but also a poignant tribute to Jeety’s late father, Dr Sajjan Singh Sachdeva, who instilled in him the values of generosity and service to humility, second year in the grave.
Jetty, known for his selfless contributions to society, involvement in prison outreach and the changing of lives in Weala, Margibi County, began over eight years ago when he started feeding hundreds of Liberians at his Via Town residence.
Since then, Jeety has made it his duty to ensure that no inmate feels forgotten or excluded during any time of gratitude and togetherness, realizing that many incarcerated individuals are separated from their families due to crimes committed.
Like this year’s Easter, Jeety, during every holiday has led his team to provide a memorable experience for prisoners, working tirelessly to prepare and pack the meals, ensuring that the recipients receive a delicious and heartfelt package to brighten their day.
His philanthropic efforts have also been well-documented, with a focus on improving the lives of the less fortunate through initiatives ranging from providing education and jobs coupled with supporting healthcare facilities.
As the sun rose over Monrovia, the atmosphere at the Monrovia Central Prison was filled with anticipation, as inmates, many of whom have faced significant hardships, were being served a hearty meal in their respective cells.
Jetty, accompanied by his team of employees, including the prison officials as observers, oversaw the distribution of cooked food, soft drinks, and fresh mineral water, ensuring that each inmate felt the warmth of the Easter spirit and the teaching of humility his father taught him.
“Today is a day of hope and renewal. Easter is a time for reflection, and I want to honour my father’s memory by sharing love and kindness with those who need it most. My father always believed in giving back to the community, and I hope to continue that legacy,” he said.
Meanwhile, the meal consisted of traditional Liberian dishes, including beans, rice, and chicken, all prepared by Liberians, while the soft drink and mineral water provided a refreshing complement to the meal, ensuring that the inmates had a festive experience.
In a world often marked by division and hardship, Jeety’s Easter celebration and the honoring of his father’s memory through an act of service at South Beach stand as a testament to the enduring power of compassion and the legacy of love that transcends even the most challenging circumstances.
