An enthusiastic sporting spirit lit up the city of Buchanan last weekend as several schools across Grand Bassa County gathered at the Doris Williams Sports Stadium for the kickoff of the county’s biggest high school tournament.
The 2025 Grand Bassa County High School Championship began with an exciting opening day of football and kickball matches, giving school-going children the opportunity to participate in two of the country’s biggest sports.
The six-day tournament, running from April 25 to May 2, marked the beginning of the National High School Football and Kickball Championship.
A total of 12 high schools from across Grand Bassa County are competing in the event.
These include WPL Brumskine, Gorblee, Open Bible, JC Early, Bassa High, New Testament, Liberia Christian, St. Joseph, Oceanview, World Wide Mission, Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), and St. Peter Claver High Schools.
The competition promises to deliver thrilling matches as the teams battle for a chance to progress to the regional championship, with hopes of advancing to the national stage.
Organized by the National High School Sports body, this tournament is the first phase of a nationwide sports competition.
The winners of both football and kickball will advance to the Regional Championship in Gbarnga, Bong County.
The National High School Sports body will cover all transportation, accommodation, and feeding expenses for the teams, allowing participants to focus solely on their performance.
The stakes are high, as the ultimate winner of the National Championship in Montserrado County will walk away with US$7,000 in cash, a trophy, medals, and an international trip to either Ghana or Nigeria (for football). Additionally, the Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in both football and kickball will be awarded US$1,000 cash prizes, along with other sponsor-backed rewards.
The tournament kicked off with an action-packed opening day.
In kickball, WPL Brumskine edged out Gorblee 1–0, while Open Bible also secured a 1–0 victory over JC Early.
On the football field, Gorblee triumphed 2–0 over WPL Brumskine, and Open Bible followed with a 2–0 win over JC Early.
The competition continued on April 28, with Bassa High facing New Testament, and Liberia Christian taking on St. Joseph in both football and kickball.
On April 29, the excitement intensified with Oceanview playing against World Wide Mission, and SDA battling St. Peter Claver in both sports.
