European Union member states are celebrating Europe Week in Liberia with history of , diplomacy, and cultural exchange, emphasizing the enduring values of peace, cooperation, and youth engagement.
Speaking on ELBC Super Morning Show, EU representative Nona Deprez recalled the founding of the European Union in the aftermath of World War II. “The EU was born from the ashes of war. It was built on a vision of peace; a desire to ensure that war would never again ravage the European continent.”
The origin of the EU dates back to the Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950, when then-French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, along with statesmen from Germany and Italy, proposed placing coal and steel production under a common authority.
This foundational move laid the groundwork for the European Union as a peace project and a mechanism for economic and political cooperation; a vision that remains central today.
Representatives from France, Germany, Sweden, and Ireland shared their perspectives during a joint interview in Monrovia, highlighting the importance of unity in the face of global geopolitical tensions.
“This year holds extra significance for Sweden. It marks 30 years since our country joined the European Union in 1995. That decision aligned us with a broader vision for peace and multilateral cooperation,” Swedish Representative.
Sweden’s ambassador noted the deep collaboration among EU member states in Liberia, citing recent joint field visits to Lofa County to assess programs and share insights.
“We complement each other well. Together, we have a stronger impact,” she said.
From the Irish perspective, EU membership has been transformative. “It was key to Ireland’s development, a journey from poverty to prosperity. Europe Day is a moment for us to reflect on how far we’ve come and where we go next,” said Emer Hughes.
France’s ambassador Isabelle Le Guelle underscored the value of solidarity. “Even with a small team here in Liberia, this week is about celebrating our unity and the strength we find in coordinated efforts especially in development cooperation.”
Europe Week’s activities in Liberia focus heavily on youth engagement. The EU delegation will hold outreach sessions with high school students and University of Liberia scholars to raise awareness about the EU’s values, its partnership with Liberia, and the importance of youth in shaping the future.
“We believe the voice of young people is essential for nation-building. That’s why we’re engaging directly with them to listen, exchange ideas, and inspire,” UN Ambassador Deprez said.
On May 9, Europe Day will be marked by a formal cocktail reception, with invitations extended to senior Liberian government officials, civil society, youth leaders, and the diplomatic community.
A more lighthearted event a friendly football and kickball match between EU staff and Liberian officials will round out the celebrations.
EU values are also reflected in its ongoing work in Liberia. “Our partnership is about much more than aid. It’s about democracy, human rights, reconciliation, and sustainable development,” she said.
According to her, In 2012, the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to advance peace and reconciliation.
As Europe Week is celebrated across Liberia, EU diplomats are reminding the world that those ideals are not just historical they are deeply relevant today.
