In a move toward revitalizing Grand Bassa’s mining sector, county authorities on Friday finalized a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mine West Minerals Limited, paving the way for the exportation of iron ore tailings from the Bacconie community near Buchanan City.
The high-level meeting, presided over by Superintendent Karyou Johnson, brought together an array of stakeholders including members of the Bassa Youth Caucus, civil society organizations, women’s groups, and media representatives. Following rigorous deliberations, the group unanimously endorsed the MOU, which is expected to unlock major socio-economic and environmental gains for the county.
The new agreement comes in the wake of the failure of STEELFORT MINING to obtain a valid mining license, leaving local authorities to seek an alternative investor. Mine West Minerals has now stepped into that role, committing to responsibly manage the exportation of residual iron ore material commonly referred to as tailings left from previous operations.
According to Superintendent Johnson, the deal represents a “turning point” for the county.
“This MOU is not just about mining; it’s about community transformation and sustainable development,” he said during the meeting.
The agreement outlines a series of key benefits.
Over $1 million will be allocated toward environmental remediation efforts, a crucial component given the legacy of ecological disruption in mining zones.
The Bacconie Clinic will be upgraded to a full health center, and substantial employment opportunities will be created for residents, especially those living in mining-affected areas.
One of the most significant features of the agreement is an 8.5% annual revenue share from the sale of exported tailings, ensuring that Grand Bassa directly benefits from its natural resources.
The MOU also mandates regular environmental and health assessments to ensure that mining operations do not compromise public wellbeing.
In addition to revenue and remediation, Mine West Minerals has pledged to construct a modern washing plant in the area and to provide support for emergency health services a move that local leaders believe will strengthen the region’s public infrastructure.
The official signing of the MOU is expected in the coming days, with Superintendent Johnson, County Council Chairperson Nancy T. Bryant, and Grand Bassa Senator Gbehzohngar Milton Findley scheduled to sign and witness the agreement.
As Grand Bassa positions itself for renewed economic growth, community leaders and citizens alike are hopeful that the deal will usher in a new era of prosperity, transparency, and sustainable development.
