Tensions flared at William V.S. Tubman University (TU) on Wednesday, leading to the abrupt postponement of the institution’s student-government elections.
According to the university administration, the elections, originally slated for April 30, were halted after a group of allegedly disgruntled students stormed multiple polling centers, seizing ballot boxes and damaging essential election materials.
The disturbances reportedly led to physical altercations, leaving at least two student election workers injured.
A statement released by the university on Wednesday confirmed the incidents and described them as a “serious breach of student conduct and campus order.”
“The Administration of William V.S. Tubman University unequivocally condemned these actions, which stand in clear violation of the Student Handbook and the values of peaceful civic engagement that TU upholds,” the release stated.
The administration, “An investigation is currently underway to identify the perpetrators and ensure they are held accountable under university policies and applicable state laws.”
Eyewitnesses said the chaos erupted in the early hours of the morning as students gathered to cast their ballots.
The tension escalated so quickly, culminating in the seizure of ballot materials and the temporary suspension of voting across campus.
Despite the disruption, the university assured the public that regular academic activities remain unaffected.
“Classes will continue as scheduled,” the administration said, urging students to maintain civility and uphold the rule of law.
A new date for the rescheduled elections is expected to be announced in May.
