The government of Liberia has officially commenced the long-awaited pavement of 8.7 kilometers of community roads in Kakata, Margibi County, marking a significant milestone in local infrastructure development.
The groundbreaking for this project takes place today, Monday, April 21, 2025, after years of delays and public demand.
The initiative can be traced back to 2018, when then-President George Manneh Weah promised Kakata residents improved roads and broke grounds for the commencement of the project.
However, despite the arrival of earth-moving machinery before the 2023 general elections, actual construction stalled, with some equipment later removed and others left idle miles away from the Kakata Police Station.
This stagnation led to mounting frustration and protests by residents, who called for an immediate action from the government.
Margibi County Development Officer Lewis Kaine, announced that the administration of President Joseph Boakai prioritized the project upon taking office.
He added that the government reviewed and revised the original contract, updating the road design from asphalt to more durable concrete pavement.
The project, contracted to TGL Construction Company and subcontracted to East Construction Company, is scheduled for completion over two years, from April 21, 2025, to April 21, 2027.
The 8.7km of paved roads will connect key areas in Kakata, including the Kakata Police Station to Charles Henry Rennie Hospital and Old Firestone Parking, the VIP to Kissi Community Road, the Mandingo Quarter to Via Town Market Road and the Old 14th Road, amongst others.
A road mapping exercise was conducted in the affected communities, and the county administration has engaged local leaders and market associations to ensure community involvement and support.
Kaine stated that no compensation will be provided to owners of structures within the road’s 13-meter perimeter, emphasizing that these buildings were constructed in violation of city planning rules.
He described the project as a “dream come true,” highlighting that this is the first time Margibi’s streets will experience such comprehensive pavement.
While the exact cost of the project remains undisclosed due to ongoing design revisions, Kaine assured that details will be published once finalized.
The county administration, in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works, will oversee the project to ensure its successful completion and lasting impact on Kakata’s development.
Kaine assured the government of local county administration’s support and supervision aimed at ensuring the successful implementation of the project.
Meanwhile, during a recent engagement meeting, local leaders and market heads praised the government’s renewed commitment and pledged their cooperation.
As Kakata prepares to transform its roadways, residents remain hopeful that the long-awaited improvements will enhance mobility and accessibility throughout the city, providing a brighter future for the community.
